Sound Company is a chamber choir of around twenty four members and has been active for over twenty years. It originally evolved as a 'Way Out' of the Havering Youth Choir for those stalwart members who could no longer be classified as 'youth' but, wanted to continue singing together. It now includes anyone who wishes to enjoy singing with a group of 20 to 40 something 'youngsters'.
The choir's conductor, John Morris, has worked with singers both young and old for over thirty years. His musical tastes are fairly eclectic and he likes to get the best from the singers in his charge whatever the music or their ability.
The choir is based at Havering Music School (tucked in behind the sixth form college) in The Walk, Hornchurch - a quarter of a mile from Upminster Bridge Station. There are usually ten rehearsals per term on Tuesday evenings between 8-10pm.
At least two or three performances every year happen in local churches and other suitable venues. We sing anything within our capability, including small scale sacred works, spirituals, African songs, light jazz arrangements of the standard song repertoire and much more. We do it for fun, but with an eye on musical achievement. Collaborations with other local musical groups are not uncommon, and have included, among others, the Havering Youth Choir, St. Andrew's Church Choir, The Can't Sing Choir and instrumentalists from Havering Music School and Havering Concert Orchestra. We also sing for charity, run the occasional social function and there is usually an end of term curry!
There is no audition to join, although some previous choral experience would be useful. The choir aims to be a friendly and inclusive group and, for the most part, asks only that you turn up to rehearsals regularly and are willing to learn. The ability to read music, although not essential, is of course useful.
